While New Zealand has 11 national statutory holidays observed nationwide, each worker is also entitled to a 12th public holiday: their regional Provincial Anniversary Day. Because New Zealand's provinces were formally abolished over a century ago in 1876, boundary questions and remote work confusion are common. Here is the full breakdown.
Why Does New Zealand Still Have Provincial Anniversaries?
Between 1853 and 1876, New Zealand was divided into semi-autonomous provincial governments. Although the Abolition of Provinces Act 1876 consolidated national governance, the regional anniversary holidays survived as deeply rooted community traditions. Today, they are formally recognized under the Holidays Act 2003.
Remote & Hybrid Workers: Which Anniversary Do You Take?
With the rise of flexible and distributed work in New Zealand, one question comes up every January: "If I live in Nelson or Wellington, but my employer's headquarters is in Auckland, which anniversary day do I observe?"
Official Employment New Zealand Principle:
Under Employment New Zealand guidelines, public holiday entitlements are determined by the location where the employee ordinarily performs their work.
Therefore, if you work remotely from home in Christchurch 100% of the time, you observe Canterbury Show Day (Canterbury Anniversary), not your employer's Auckland Anniversary, unless your employment agreement specifically stipulates otherwise.

The "Neighboring Region" Off-Peak Hack
One of the smartest travel hacks in New Zealand is taking advantage of other provinces' anniversaries. If you live in Wellington or Canterbury, travelling during Auckland Anniversary means popular domestic destinations (like Rotorua or Queenstown) have standard flight and accommodation rates because only the upper North Island is off work.
